What does MusicXML mean for SmartMusic?

Yesterday MakeMusic announced it would purchase MusicXML and Dolet software from Recordare. If you're interested in the details, check out today's Finale blog post and the official press release.

What does this mean for users of SmartMusic?

If you or your colleagues have Sibelius 5 or 6 files you'd like to use in SmartMusic, you previously had to purchase Dolet for Sibelius (at $199) in order to save MusicXML files from Sibelius. These files could then be read in Finale and saved for use in SmartMusic. The big news for you is that MakeMusic will soon make Dolet for Sibelius available for free, making it just that much easier to get this music into SmartMusic.

In short, if you or your coworkers have old Sibelius files you'd like to use with SmartMusic, you will likely receive one holiday gift a little early this year.

One still needs to get Finale to make a SmartMusic file though.

I think MakeMusic sort of doesn't understand why people were using MusicXML. It was to transfer files out of Finale into Sibelius because a lot of us are fed up with how MakeMusic does not address bugs in the software, or fully finished "features" that were added in previous releases. In fact, look at slurs. How many times has MakeMusic rebranded the fixing of slurs? Sibelius would have fixed that in a point release, or fixed it at some point but not rebrand it. Or linked parts. I could keep going...

It is great that the overpriced Dolet software is going to be free. But it is hardly a transparent process to move files between Sibelius and Finale.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your comments. I apologize if I didn't make it clear that Finale is required to make SmartMusic files. For the record, I believe there are a lot of reasons why people use MusicXML.

If there are specific things you'd like to see added in Finale, or in the process of sharing MusicXML files back and forth with Sibelius, please feel free to send me a PM or submit a case.
