Finding Music in SmartMusic 2010

by James H. Anderson 26. August 2009 10:16

The first thing you'll notice about SmartMusic 2010 is the new Find Music interface. This is the result of extensive surveys, focus groups, and home visits where we discovered that many SmartMusic users were unaware of the vast repertoire included with SmartMusic. The new Find Music lets you browse through categories (method books, solos, band and orchestra music, and others) or use the Quick Search to search for a specific piece or composer.

Upon reviewing your search results you can now click "Download for Later" to download any piece in the background while you continue searching. Once you've downloaded music, it will be saved to the computer you're working from, and you can review what you've saved in the "On This Computer" area on the left side of your screen. Click "Home" (in the upper-left corner) to return to the full SmartMusic catalog for more searching.

These improvements mean it's now much faster to preview what's in SmartMusic: I'm pretty sure you'll discover some music you didn't know we had available. If you don't see a piece and would like us to add it, please share your requests with us at: http://www.smartmusic.com/FindMusic/Request.aspx.

Smartmusic 2010 is very confusing to me.  First of all, where did all the music I used to be able to browse and select and music I created using my Finale go?   The video instruction is still using the old way of finding the music, which does not help me find out how to do the same with 2010 version.  The help section is not much of quick help.

Did I waste my money buy renewing my subscription?

(I am an amateur recorder player who used to use SM for playing Baroque music)

Eiji,

You can get to your Finale-created files on the lower-left where it says "My Accompaniments."

I'd use the Quick Search in the upper-right area to track down recorder music directly. You can choose the instrument and search with no other options and you'll get all of the repertoire available.

It should be faster overall, although it is a bit of a change. I'll ask the documentation guys to look over the videos to make sure we get those updated to match 2010.

Well, personally I miss the old smart music. When I search for things now, I cant seem to find any of the music that I did before and it feels like a lot less music now. I am confused by the new interface for the search bit, but I am glad that the actual program hasnt changed too much.  I liked the simplicity of the old music library. I used to be able to find all the music I needed and now I have to pick a book and decide if it is the right one and it takes me a lot longer now...and I still havent found everything I need.

And finally, as a reminder: when you want to download a method book (or other repertoire) and choose Download for Later, you can keep on working in SmartMusic. After you download the files, they are there on your computer for good.
